I took him, with my car, and when I was returning from the docks I hit another car. My car fell apart, so I couldn’t continue my trip back home. I took the subway with my friend and when I got back home I went to see another friend who had a car. We tied the broken car to my friends car and towed it from downtown Manhattan to the Bronx, but we had lots of trouble on our way. The rope snapped and we had to stop a few times because it happened again. We started to cross the bridge to the Bronx and the rope broke just when the bridge was opening to let a boat go by. While the bridge was up we tied the car back, this time with wire and we kept going until we got to the parking lot where I kept my car; paying $3.00 a month.
When I was downtown, someone offered me $5.00 for the car but I didn’t sell it. I thought it was too little money, so I decided to take it to the Bronx. But after having so much trouble, when I got to the parking lot I didn’t know what to do with it. The parking lot attendant offered me $3.00 so I sold it to him. I lost $2.00. I should have left the car while I was downtown. Well, that’s how life goes sometimes.
After that, I bought another car...this time a 1931 ford. I bought this one with my cousin, as partners. We had it for about six months, but one day I was going for a ride but the car wasn’t in the parking lot so I thought that my cousin had it. After an hour he saw me and told me the bad news. He said that the car had caught fire and it cost $35.00 so he gave me $17.50, half of what we spent on it.
In 1933 when Roosevelt was president, I attended the "red course" of instructions in a citizens military training camp at Plattsburg Barracks, New York, from August 1st to August 13th. I was supposed to continue but I had to work in those days. My younger brother [Hiram] was with me and he went the following year. He made Sergeant.
Later, the President had a program for people without jobs called the Civilian Conservation Corpse, the CCC, which was designed to put jobless people to work in the national forests and on federal conservation and road construction projects. When this was going on I was not working so I signed a contract to go. I had everything ready in case that I had to leave. I always liked adventures. I was given an opportunity and I took it!
I was called almost immediately. I didn’t have any idea where they were going to send us but we were already at the railroad station when one of the men in charge told us that we were going to Glacier National Park in Montana. He told us to get ready for a long trip. It was in a pullman. We had to sleep in the train about two nights. When we got there, we got in a truck which took us to the campgrounds. It was already getting dark. The First thing we did was to go to the mess hall and eat a very good meal. We started to introduce ourselves to each other. Time passed. Then it was time to go to bed. The next day, after we had some breakfast, we were given our uniforms, underwear, hats, etc. We did some calisthenics and took a nice shower.
