We finally reached the town of Pilsen where we stayed. Knowing that we were to leave any day, we began to get ready. Meanwhile, I started to think about all the places we covered, all the way from Tidworth, England to Pilsen, Czechoslavakia, and everything that happened to me. For instance pitching tents on the outskirts of Tidworth, where it looked like tent city in the mud!

One day, things were getting very hot we had to run back for better position. I ran out of luck once more when I was forced to jump over a trench about four foot wide by five deep. I got tangled up by some wire which caught my neck and made me fall on my back down the trench. I was carrying a rain coat on my back, which broke the fall but I got a dandy mark on the front of my neck from the wire.

Once I had to stand on guard in a house that we were staying at for a short time. I was sent to stay in the attic look looking through the window. One of the boys went upstairs to bring me a plate with a piece of bread and two eggs. I kept looking out the window and at the same time I started eating the eggs and a few minutes passed when there was a big noise, the sound of a cannon. I dropped what I had in my hand and ran downstairs. A squad was sent to destroy what was a cannon operated by two Germans, which were taken prisoner. They hit a large tree very close to the house.

On many occasions, we had to climb on tanks when we weren’t using the half tracks and it was very cold. The tank had handles on the sides so the soldiers could hold themselves to them, but it was so cold that we had to wear gloves. If we didnt', the skin on our hands would stick to the tank handles.

I remember when we were out on the field the Lieutenants and even our Captain first turned their hats around so the enemy wouldn’t see differences between their ranks. The enemy would be very happy getting rid of the higher ranks first.

Pilsen, Czechoslovakia was our last stop. There was nothing else to do but wait for our time to leave. We were all very happy in a way but sorry because we were leaving some of our men in our company behind.

The time we were waiting for was finally here and we were brought to the railroad station by trucks and finally to our trains. Talking about trains, that reminds me when we went to London we went to Piccadilly Circus and other places for three days, then we went to Paris for another three days.
